Social media platform Twitter is investigating a hacking incident involving verified accounts of influential people including Barrack Obama, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Kanye West among others. The platform CEO Jack Dorsey indicated that Twitter became aware of the breach after several tweets were posted on highly visible accounts luring unsuspecting Twitter users into a bitcoin scam.
We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly.

After the incident, the platform moved to delete the tweets and suspend the affected accounts, terming the incident a ‘coordinated social engineering attack’ by people who successfully targeted some of the platform’s employees with access to internal systems and tools.
Twitter has also limited the functionality for a much larger group of accounts including all verified accounts as investigations continue.
The DCI has urged all Kenyans to be vigilant and enable the two-factor authentication on emails and social media accounts.
