Quickmart Supermarket has on 12th July 2020 opened its 33rd outlet in an unprecedented expansion plan that has turned the retailer into one of the fastest growing in the country. The store was opened in Embakasi in a bid to tap into a market previously dominated by Nakumatt and Tuskys supermarkets. Nakumatt has since collapsed after efforts to revive it proved unsuccessful while Tuskys is alleged to be facing cashflow hitches.
The Kenyan retail sector has been hard hit by disruptions which have seen former giants like Nakumatt and Uchumi exit the market for new entrants like Naivas, Quickmart and foreign shops including Carrefour, Shoprite and Game. Quickmart has grown to become the third biggest retailer in the country, with the Embakasi outlet coming only a month after the retailer opened its 32nd store in the upmarket Kilimani area.
