KMPDU Secretary General Chibanzi Mwachonda tests positive for Covid-19.

The acting Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Dr. Chibanzi Mwachonda has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement on Friday July 31, Dr. Chibanzi has stated that he contracted the virus in the course of his official duties.

“I’m currently in a stable condition and under self-isolation. My family is safe, contact tracing and testing of all close contacts is ongoing,” part of the statement read.

According to the KMPDU leader, the coronavirus is in the widespread community transmission phase and all Kenyans are at risk of contracting the virus but this should not be a cause for fear or stigma to affected individuals or their families.

Chibanzi added that the high number of recoveries offers hope that Kenya will win the war against an invisible enemy calling on Kenyans to adhere to the Ministry of Health containment guidelines.

“I urge all Kenyans to adhere to the Ministry of Health prevention measures: putting on masks, washing hands, avoiding unnecessary movement and gatherings in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and enable us to flatten the curve as a country”, Chibanzi stated.

He also called upon the government to support front-line workers by providing adequate and quality PPEs as well as a welfare packages on work injury benefits and comprehensive medical treatment.

“To my colleagues on the front-line, we soldier on in the service to humanity cognizant of the great risk of infection to all of us”, Dr. Chibanzi added.

The revelation by Dr. Chibanzi comes in the wake of rising new cases of Covid-19 in the country.

The Ministry of Health on Thursday July 30, reported 788 additional new cases raising the total case load in the country to 19,913.
