Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman has explained the importance of breast milk in boosting immunity for infants against the Coronavirus disease. Speaking on Thursday during the daily briefing on Covid-19 in the country, Dr. Aman said that it was highly unlikely for mothers to transmit the virus to newborns through breast milk. He also said that the cases of severe Covid-19 illness in infants were low.
The world is currently celebrating the World Breastfeeding Week at a time when countries across the world are grappling with the Coronavirus pandemic that has wrecked havoc within the health sector. He proposed the following measures to safeguard against direct transmission of the virus from mother to child:
- Mothers should wash their hands with soap and water before touching their babies and before breastfeeding.
- Mothers to wear face masks or to ensure their faces are covered while breastfeeding.
- Mothers should wash their hands with soap and water before handling and administering milk formula to their babies.
