Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has on Monday July 6 arrived in Lilongwe Malwawi, for the inauguration of the Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera.
Moi who is in the company of Foreign Affairs CAS Ababu Namwamba is representing President Uhuru Kenyatta who is in Kenya leading the country in the fight against the Covid-19 spread.
Questions have been raised however as to why Gideon, who is a known Political rival of the Deputy President, was preferred to lead the Kenyan delegation on behalf of President Kenyatta, a role that for long has been ideally believed to be reserved for Deputy William Ruto.
Ministry of foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau had explained that Gideon was picked since he was a senior senator.
“Gideon Moi is a senior senator and will sufficiently represent the head of state,” the PS stated.
The senator’s spokesperson Alex Kiprotich confirmed to a local publisher that the legislator was already at Malawi’s capital on the request of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
State House also emailed a copy of Uhuru’s speech which Moi will read on his behalf.
Chakwera garnered 58.57% of votes that were cast on Tuesday, June 23, during Malawi’s repeat polls that were convened after he successfully contested the win of the incumbent President Peter Mutharika in court.
In February 2020, the court ruled that the May 2019 General Election was marred by malpractices and directed the poll agency to conduct another election. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the swearing-in ceremony was scaled down to only 100 guests.
