The Senate will today decide whether the impeachment charges against Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru will be heard by a select committee. Yesterday, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka confirmed that the Senate Business Committee met on Friday where they proposed that an 11 member select committee be constituted to hear the impeachment charges against Governor Waiguru.
The Speaker noted that the House has the final say on the matter despite some Senators being opposed to the formation of a select committee to hear the charges against the embattled governor.
Governor Waiguru was impeached on June 9th after 23 out of 33 Kirinyaga MCAs voted in favor of an impeachment motion tabled against her.
In January this year, the Senate rejected a proposal to establish a select committee to investigate the impeachment of then Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu. The impeachment saga has brought into play the political rivalry between DP William Ruto and Opposition Chief Raila Odinga as ODM throws its weight behind the Governor. ODM Director of Elections on Sunday revealed that ODM would defend Ms Waiguru.
Allies to the DP have expressed their lack of confidence in the Senate in the midst of allegations that the Governor met Raila Odinga in a night meeting which they say is a culmination of efforts by Raila to save her from the impeachment saga. Former Majority Leader to the Senate Kipchumba Murkomen has implied that the Senate will likely show bias in favor of Ms Waiguru.
If Govt wants to save Waiguru regardless of the facts, then she will he saved. If govt&Capitol Hill dry cleaners combine forces then Senate will do NOTHING .A few of us will makes some noise, quote the Constitution&our DC will rule us out of order&declare her Mweupe kama pamba.
