200 arrested flouting curfew orders and making merry at notorious Avery Lounge Utawala.

Over 200 people were on the night of Friday July 24 arrested during a police operation in Utawala area of Nairobi County violating the 9pm-4am curfew imposed as means to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Those arrested were found drinking and violating the Ministry of Health Coviod-19 containment guidelines among them the social distancing at the notorious Avery Lounge.

This was the fourth time in recent months the entertainment joint was being raided by the police and continues to operate with impunity despite rubbing the law the wrong way and especially during this Covid-19 pandemic.

A fortnight ago, several people – including the area MCA – were arrested in the same spot that is said to operate with impunity due to the owner’s powerful connections to those in authority.

The suspects were taken to Kayole and Ruai police stations as they await being presented before courts Monday.

The raid comes a week after Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was arrested drinking in a bar in Kilimani area in total disregard of the Covid-19 containment guidelines.

Sakaja who later apologized to Kenyans and resigned from his position as the Chair of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Covid-19, admitted to being guilty in court and was fined Kshs. 15000 or serve three months imprisonment.
